BT Wants WiMAX

According to a news release, BT (British Telecom) is seeking WIMAX information and plans to bid for spectrum in the UK. The company plans to combine Wi-Fi, cellular and WiMAX and provide these services to its subscribers. Obviously, this is big news. The more important question is who will BT hire to build and deploy their network? Also, who will be supplying the WiMAX equipment, base stations and CPE’s? These are just some of the questions people are asking on the street.

A WiMAX roll out by BT would be a multi million dollar deal and the beneficiary would almost instantly be put on the map. So far the potential candidates are the usual Motorola, Siemens and Nokia camp. For equipment, BT already uses Alvarion’s equipment for its fixed wireless access networks, but they could always change the vendor when a full scale WIMAX rollout is planned.

Slowly, all the major Telco’s of the world are switching to WiMAX and the adoption of the technology seems to be picking up pace from its slow start since last year.

BT were doing WiMax trials in Nairn three years ago so this is no surprise.
