Malaysia to award 2.3GHz licenses next month

WiMAX licenses in Malaysia

Since Sep' 2006, the Malaysian government is delaying the allocation of four licenses for WiMAX. Now the licenses are expected to be awarded during next month. In the past, Redtone International, DiGi (GSM Operator) and Maxis were among the bidders hoping to get license.

The operator offering the highest speed at the lowest price is likely to win license according to Malaysian Energy, Water and Communications Minister 'Dr. Lim Keng Yaik'. However, tariff is not the only criterion. Companies willing to get the license should have substantial amount of resources required for a nation wide rollout.

Malaysian Minister envisions low cost wireless broadband access for everyone in Malaysia. The participation of GSM operator in the bid to win WiMAX license signifies the true power of WiMAX.
