Sprint’s Relationship with Google Blossoming Beyond WiMAX?
According to Reuters, Sprint is negotiating a
plan to incorporate Google applications on its phones and mobile devices. Back
in August, Sprint had already agreed to include Google search “and
communications services” with their Xohm network. Now, this relationship seems
to be growing beyond the Xohm network and extending into Sprint’s devices at
large.
This is an interesting move, particularly for Google. For months now there has
been speculation about the many ways Google may try to expand its influence into
the mobile universe.
Rumors began in the summer that Google would eventually launch its own mobile
device referred to as the Google Phone or gphone. Google has also shown
interest in the
2009 auction for the 700 MHz spectrum. Now that Google is in talks with
Sprint, it would be interesting to see if a WiMAX-Google connection also
blossoms. Since Google appears to have such a strong developmental interest in
mobile technology, WiMAX would be a viable vehicle toward that end. Whether or
not Google’s interests will coincide with a WiMAX investment remains to be seen.
