Comcast Makes its First WiMAX Investment
Comcast has invested an unknown sum in broadband content management start-up Cartiza.
I am not sure what I find most interesting in this news report, that Comcast, through its investment arm Comcast Interactive Capital, has quietly invested an unnamed sum in a broadband content management company called Cartiza or the type of company it is. The fact that this is an investment without a splashy announcement is fascinating in and of itself, but so is the type of company. As Comcast has already clearly announced intent to leverage Clearwire's spectrum with femtocell deployments it should not be too surprising to see more emphasis on the technology. But clearly Comcast is serious about this broadband wireless business it has put its money into.
Cartiza, based in Massachusetts is clearly a start-up in stealth mode. Its website states that it is developing a mobile content management system based on all IP architecture, and all for voice, video and data. What exactly that means is up for interpretation. Cartiza, founded in early 2006 previously garnered investment of $12.6 million. Other investors include Prizm VentureWorks and the Business Development Bank of Canada. Cartiza is a WiMAX Forum member.
I think this may signal a flurry of WiMAX infrastructure start-up designed to support the delivery of services and content for existing mobile carriers using the technology. Interesting news by any measure.
