WiMAX in India to hit the road running: Low cost devices to be available in 2009
Intel has announced an alliance with the WiMax Forum - India aimed at developing low cost WiMax devices for the Indian WiMAX market.
Sriram Viswanthan , Intel's Vice- President and General Manager of the WiMax
Program Office)
told reporters in New Delhi, "Intel will work with the WiMax Forum, and
device manufacturers to bring out WiMAX enabled notebook and notebook to the
Indian market by 2009."
Viswanathan added that the alliance is focused on delivering "affordable"
devices to Indians that will leverage the upcoming 4G WIMAX networks, with the
initial focus being on 2.3 and 2.5 GHz devices. Paricipating companies
would be part of the alliance through the
WiMAX Open Patent Alliance.
This is a significant announcement as India is the fastest growing telecom
market in the world and promises to be the largest potential market for mobile
WiMAX. While we expect the initial WiMAX deployments to be for business
fixed line broadband wireless access, we think mobile WiMAX will not be too far
behind if the Intel - WiMAX Forum led consortium can deliver low cost devices as
promised. The WiMax Forum says India would have over 27.5 million
broadband Internet users by 2012.
We'd like to call your attention to a very lively wimax360.com discussion and
debate about WiMAX in India:
Mobile WiMAX Spotlight on India. Here is a quote from Amitabh's post
which kicked off the discussion that followed:
"The Indian mobile sector has proved its mettle with a monthly growth figure of
8-9 million customers a month even in difficult economic conditions. The
base of subscribers, now standing at 300 million is set to double in the next
three years to over 600 million customers. All this is happening with
serious gaffes in spectrum allocation. The stage is now set for the
auction of 2G and Mobile WiMAX 2.5 G spectrum and that is what is set to be yet
another inflection point in the fastest growing telecom market in the world.
With the 2.5 G spectrum falling under the ambit of IMT2000, the battle for the
spectrum is set to be keen."
This author noted that
3G has finally made its debut in India: "After much postponement,
India is finally on the 3G map of the world as Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL)
kick-started 3G services in Delhi today."
Conclusion: With users gaining experience with 3G data technology, it will prime
the pump for higher quality and higher speed applications realized though mobile
WiMAX, especially if the devices are available and affordable. But first
WiMAX in India will satisfy an urgent need for enterprise/small business
customer's broadband access in areas where DSL or other wire-line technology is
not available.

Where is it?
why not all these guys join together and release a single big add like they did when they launched the cell phone and tell the people that they can get good and affordable internet plus cheap but limited internat ( for emails only).
But they are fighting among themselves like a pack of wolves ! 600 million cusotmers in India is a dubious figure as many of us have two or three cells to avoid being ripped of by the cell cos.. actual figure of user will be about 200 million and so there is a three or four fold real increas is possible..
but i find in the name of competition they are all confusing the customer who in retallation just switches off the cell phone whenever he or she is not using !
let these companies have a single and simple plan format and then come forward to help the customer..we will respond by increasing our phone calls..the customer is in a 'sathya graha' mode as advocated by gandhi as complaints to any of these companies is just a waste of time..
please lauch wimax and 3g of any g in a better and co-ordinated way to help all of us so that all of us will help.. too much officialese will not help..

WiMAX in INDIA
I totally agree with this...let us make a group and let people be told and make them aware....let people benfit first come into picture....

WiMAX Spectrum Auction in India
Considering that 5MHz 3G Spectrum ( total 15 Mhz for 3 operators including MTNL) will be vastly inadequate to serve the massive Indian market, the 60 MHz available in each market in India for Mobile WIMAX is going to be a gold mine for any operator. It also presents opportunites to companies which have not been able to enter the Indian market so far and take part in the massive mobile play.It also presents the biggest opportunity to present new mobile low cost devices. The huge market size will make these devices viable.
The market already has very low cost notebooks based on Intel Atom as well as a range of mobile music and video players. Intel needs to present its strength to potential bidders to take a different view of this market than only enterprise or 3G.One can hope that this will happen despite the auctions squarely straddling the holiday season.
The only other players which have been active in the Mobile WiMAX devices market are Samsung and Motorola. It is certain that they already have their priorities right, being existing players in the Indian market.
