DigitalBridge Communications first with WiMAX Forum Certified gear in U.S.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming stakes claim as first U.S. city offering services with WiMAX Forum Certified equipment.
DigitalBridge Communications (DBC), a wireless ISP in the United States, has launched the first commercial Mobile WiMAX network using WiMAX Forum Certified 802.16e equipment in the U.S. with service in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The new mobile capability enhances its BridgeMAXX fixed high-speed wireless Internet service.
The service uses Alvarion's BreezeMAX 2.5 GHz base station, which recently received the WiMAX Forum Certified mark for equipment based on the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard for mobile broadband. The certification assures network operators that infrastructure and devices carrying the logo are interoperable with each other and enabling equipment purchase from multiple vendors. The Wyoming network will offer Alvarion's CPE modems and 4Motion peripherals, which have yet to be certified. DBC is Alvarion's largest U.S. customer.
"One of the benefits of the evolving WiMAX ecosystem is that it will support small and medium-sized towns as well as larger cities," said Kelley Dunne, CEO of DBC. "DBC's core mission is to reach communities such as Jackson and connect them to the global economy." Jackson Hole and the greater Teton County are home to about 19,000 residents. The area is home to several protected wilderness reserves, including Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. The combined summer and winter recreation attract over 3 million people annually to the region.
DBC's launch scoops the recent Sprint news that the national cellular provider will launch its first mobile WiMAX network commercially in Baltimore, Maryland this September. Sprint delayed an April launch anticipated for Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Chicago that would have had it entering the market first. Virginia-based DBC is only 30 miles from the heart of Washington D.C. and the planned Xohm city.
The new mobility service plan offers 3Mbps download performance for under $40 per month. Current BridgeMAXX fixed-service users can add the mobility feature for a bundled price of less than $30 per month.
