Local equipment developer fuels growth for WiMAX in Indonesia
PT Hariff Daya Tunggal Engineering launches end-to-end WiMAX system.
WiMAX equipment doesn't have to be an import
solution. This is the message from PT Hariff Daya Tunggal Engineering (Hariff
DTE), a system manufacturer in Indonesia. The company recently unveiled its
HiMAX-231 network solution. Based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard and using the
Wavesat DM256 chipset, the 2.3 GHz Base Station and Subscriber Station were
designed, developed and manufactured in Indonesia.
WiMAX got off to a slow start when the government would not permit access to
spectrum for support of the 2005 tsunami recovery that devastated prior
communications systems. In March 2006, telecommunications operator PT. Citra
Sari Makmur (CSM) announced it was expanding its WiMAX network with Aperto
Networks. CSM holds licenses in the 2.5, 3.5 and 5 GHz frequency bands.

The home-grown solution from Hariff DTE could be
a significant gain for WiMAX use in the country. Import tariffs on
telecommunications equipment often stifle plans for aggressive network growth.
The privately-held manufacturer has an immediate cost advantage for local
business.
A June 2007 report from investment firm Lehmann Brothers described a bullish
prognosis for WiMAX in Indonesia. The country is considered limited in its
ability to provide copper infrastructure necessary to proliferate broadband
services using DSL. This renders WiMAX and other broadband wireless technologies
as heir to the throne in a market lacking broadband penetration. The firm
calculated broadband penetration of Indonesia at only 0.5%. Indonesia has an
estimated population of 234.7 million people. About 20 million people - 8.5% of
the population - have access to the Internet. [1]
