World's First WiMAX/GSM Handset Hits the Market
Taiwan's HTC unveils the world's first combined WiMAX and GSM handset for the Russian cellular market.
Taiwanese handset manufacturer HTC has designed a combined WiMAX and GSM handset
running on the Windows Mobile OS platform. The device will be offered on Russian
carrier Scartel's WiMAX network in Moscow and St. Petersburg with its Yota brand
of PCS service.
The device, part of HTC's "Touch" series, will be available November 26 to
Scartel's consumers. Yota intends to offer multi-media services such as a video
on demand service of 14 free channels initially, which will climb to 23 channels
by the end of this year.
The HTC MAX 4G is touted to display up to 9 simultaneous TV channels on its 3.8
inch screen and it has an 8 GB memory. A 50,000 strong collection of music
titles will also be available for streaming or download.
The phone will default to GSM for calls to anyone outside the network, with GSM
being very prevalent in the Russian mobile market. When subscribers call each
other on the Yota service, calls will route through the carrier's WiMAX network.
