iCON Communications to launch WiMAX service in Armenia during 2009

Yerevan to receive high-speed Internet, VoIP and data services by January with expansion to major cities and tourism destinations over the next year.

iCON Communications announced plans to launch WiMAX service in Yerevan, Armenia by January 2009 and expanded coverage into major Armenian cities during calendar 2009.  The operator further announced it has secured a multi-million dollar investment by a multinational holding company specializing in telecommunication investments.  The financial infusion will accelerate the WiMAX rollout in Yerevan and the rest of the country.

The WiMAX network will initially provide high speed internet access as a wireless alternative for cable modems and DSL.  Over time, the service will be expanded to cover entire geographic areas for iCON customers to access the network wherever they are within the coverage areas.  The major advantage of WiMAX over wired broadband technologies is that installation and activation is immediate, and does not require any last-mile connection.

iCON will offer high-speed wireless broadband internet, Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Voice over IP (VoIP) services to consumer, corporate and governmental customers in Armenia.  "Our corporate philosophy is to leverage global standards of technical performance, customer service and competitive pricing to becoming the connecting force between Armenians of all ages and the global community," said Adam Kablanian, CEO of iCON Communications.

Established in 2007, iCON Communications is a broadband internet service provider in the Republic of Armenia.  As of August 2007, an ITU report on the state of broadband internet found only 172,800 Internet users in the country (only 5.8% of the population).  The provider plans to offer internet, data and VoIP services covering all major cities, tourist locations and large enterprise locations in Armenia by the end of 2009.

Where there is a will there is a way. Analysis functions can be incorporated and individuals can provide for their own. In the meantime, publicity issues will be handled.
