A new batch of WiMAX certified products emerge
WiMAX Forum predicted 100 new certified products this year. Is the association on track to meet its goal?
Industry trade association WiMAX Forum announced in March that it expected to
certify 100 products during 2008. Two-thirds of the year has passed and 25
products have been certified. In all, 57 products have demonstrated conformance
to radio and protocol tests, along with interoperability testing between
multiple vendor base stations and subscriber stations since the first approvals
were granted in January 2006. The majority of products certified this year are
based on the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard (commonly known as Mobile WiMAX). Only
two - a base station and a subscriber radio from Redline's RedMAX family - were
certified for the earlier 802.16-2004 standard.
Fourteen different vendors have certified mobile WiMAX products during the first
eight months of the year. The radios support either the 2.3 GHz Wave 1
requirements for WiBro services in South Korea or the broader 2.5 GHz band Wave
2 requirements offered in many countries today and the basis for many of the
anticipated large networks including Japan, Taiwan, and the United States.

The range of certified products available for mobile WiMAX varies at this early
stage of the market. Ten of the products are base stations that will establish
the operator's network coverage. Thirteen are devices including radio modules,
desktop modems, PC Cards and USB adapters. Eight of the certifications are for
reference designs that other equipment vendors will use to accelerate product
development.
All hope is not lost for the industry group to rally and certify more products
in the next three months than it has over the last three years. Member companies
are gathering in Macau later this month to further the technical objectives of
WiMAX. The industry will gather for the annual WiMAX World conference a week
later in Chicago. Keep your fingers crossed.
