WiMAX World Chicago Preview

Thousands prepare for the annual conference that brings the people and business of WiMAX together.

During the last week of September, more than 10,000 are expected to gather in Chicago, USA for the 5th annual WiMAX World conference. This year's event will combine a day of workshops and seminars followed by two days of industry keynote and break-out session tracks. In parallel, the exhibition floor provides access to 150 vendors and a solutions theater.

The big news everyone is holding their breath for - will Sprint Nextel meet its September deadline to launch the XOHM service in Baltimore, Maryland or will another delay give consumers reason to wait for mobile broadband from other providers? The rumor mill is abuzz on the topic. WiMax.com sources say to expect an announcement in Chicago that XOHM is accepting customer orders. The first half of October will likely be filled with pomp and circumstance activities, including retail kiosk openings and formal launch events.

The three-day conference starts with workshops and seminars on Tuesday from Yankee Group, Maravedis, and Redline Communications.

The first conference day includes four hours of keynote addresses from WiMAX Forum, Clearwire, Motorola, Intel, Nortel, Tata Communications, and an operator roundtable to close out the morning. The afternoon is filled with five concurrent conference tracks: Business of WiMAX, Technology of WiMAX, WiMAX Applications & Services, WiMAX Ecosystem, and Global Deployment Strategies & Spectrum Policy.

On the second conference day, the keynote agenda is headlined by: Samsung, Scartel Russia, Sprint Nextel, Alvarion, DigitalBridge Communications, Nokia Siemens Networks, and a WiMAX ecosystem roundtable. Additional conference track sessions occur in the afternoon to close out the show.

Several "don't miss" activities happen during the event. WiMax.com continues its WiMAX University technology training with a two-day course for architects, designers, and engineers. Yankee Group hosts the 4G Executive Summit on September 30. The Best of WiMAX World USA Awards presentation is on October 1.

Live demonstrations of WiMAX services are planned by POSDATA and perhaps another preview of XOHM's Chicago network will be in order from Sprint and Motorola.
