The 3.65 GHz Band Gains a Big Convert
Top 5 Regional broadband wireless player KeyOn Communications inks a deal with Airspan to deploy its 3.65 GHz radios in a Nevada trial.
From a press release publicly traded regional broadband provider KeyOn
Communications announced a deal this past week to deploy Airspan 3.65 GHz radios
in Pahrump, NV. The deal by KeyOn is slated to cover the approximately
13,000 households in Pahrump, NV initially and possibly in other markets later.
Once the network lights up, KeyOn will market the product to its customers.
KeyOn also plans to test the efficacy of VoIP across this band.
KeyOn becomes the largest player that I know of in the US to begin testing the
use of this spectrum band. While not a nationwide player like Clearwire KeyOn is
nevertheless amongst the top 5 largest broadband wireless ISP players in the US
with something on the order of 20,000 subscribers in several Midwest and Western
states.
This vote for the technology reinforces my belief that, if the gear performs
reliably, that the 3.65 GHz band could be a major tool in the arsenal of
independent wireless ISPs lacking licensed point-to-multipoint spectrum.
As I have previously blogged about there are few limitations to using this band
around the country. In the cases where there are exclusion zones it is
potentially possible to still deploy if permission can be garnered from the
terrestrial satellite operator.
