WiMAX Forum Global Congress 09: Day 1

The industry's flagship event was underway this week in Amsterdam with attendees and operators from over 95 countries. Keynotes from industry leaders emphasized the importance of broadband connectivity on growing economies.

Ron Resnick, WiMAX Forum

Ron Resnick, WiMAX Forum president, officially kicked off the event on Tuesday emphasizing that now is the right time for investment in WiMAX. "My message to operators is to deploy now; to regulators to make more spectrum available; and to investors to make a bet on WiMAX", says Resnick. Resnick also said that in the wireless industry "spectrum is the fuel" and that governments and regulators need remove barriers to help spur the deployment of networks.

Resnick also pointed to evidence showing that in difficult economic times, demand for entertainment services actually increases and that the current 3G networks are just not able to deliver a true mobile broadband service. "HSPA just can't deliver video which is a potential killer app", said Resnick.

Barry West, Clearwire

That theme was continued in the following keynote by Clearwire executive Barry West. "In the past wireless networks have been about coverage, today they are about tonnage - the ability to deliver high-bandwidth connectivity to a large number of subscribers", says West.

We will have further updates from the show floor this week and a complete wrap-up of the event early next week.
