Comarch Constructs Turn-Key WiMAX Network for Promonte, Montenegro

Comarch concluded the last phase of a WiMAX project at Promonte, the prime GSM mobile service provider in Montenegro. The project introduces global activity taken within Telenor Group's - "Internet to the people", taking advantage of the combination of up to date technologies like 3GHSPA, WiMAX and WiFi.

The project focuses on three areas: construction of the WiMAX transport network, installation of access to WiFi infrastructure and core equipment (OSS/BSS systems, routing & switching). The construction of the WiMAX network included delivery and installation of WiMAX base stations in 7 major cities of the country. The range of the network was further extended by building WiFi access infrastructure in main tourist locations (hotels areas, busy squares). In the areas not covered by WiMAX technology, access will be ensured using integrated WiFi over UMTS transport. The last stage of the project includes installation of OSS/BSS systems and core routing/switching equipment.

Vecima Networks Launches 3.65 GHz WiMAX Solution for the US Market

Vecima Networks Inc.  announced Thursday the launch of its Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certified 3.65 GHz VistaMAX base and subscriber stations, the latest addition to Vecima’s VistaMAX family of WiMAX compliant products.  Based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, the FCC certified 3.65 GHz VistaMAX products, including both base and subscriber stations, offers US operators the opportunity to reap the benefits of WiMAX while operating in a lightly licensed piece of spectrum.

“Building on the success of our 900 MHz WaveRider and wireless DOCSIS solutions, we are focused on providing US customers with a cost effective and proven solution that will enable them to strengthen their business model and generate more revenue from their networks,” said Robert Forget, Director of Wireless Product Management at Vecima.  “After receiving FCC certification for our 3.65 GHz VistaMax equipment we are now ready to offer products that address the specific needs of the important US market.”

Vecima believes that every community deserves to benefit from broadband access and with Vecima’s VistaMAX products, bringing broadband to underserved rural areas has never been easier.  The 3.65 GHz VistaMAX is based upon the same platform as Vecima’s 3.5 GHz VistaMAX which has been successfully deployed in 25 different countries.  In order to allow US operators to test Vecima’s equipment in their own environment, and to address their different needs and budget constraints, Vecima has designed two cost-effective 3.65 GHz WiMAX starter kits.  For a limited time Vecima is offering qualified US Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) the opportunity to evaluate the equipment for a 30-day period.

“With the low cost of ownership our new 3.65 GHz VistaMAX should allow WISPs all over the United States to overcome the challenges they are facing with the overly cluttered 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz unlicensed bands and also address the heightened budgetary constraints that they are facing in the current economic climate,” said Sumit Kumar, Vecima’s VP of Corporate Strategy.

About VistaMAX

The VistaMAX product family is based on IEEE 802.16-2004 standard and is commercially available in the 1.9GHz, 3.5GHz and 3.65GHz frequencies.  The VistaMAX base station is an all-outdoor base station that is contained in weatherproof sealed housing.  The VistaMAX base station has an integrated 60, 90 or 120 degree antennas to offer a single box solution for WiMAX applications.  External antennas can be accommodated with an optional N female connector.  The VistaMAX system also offers both outdoor and indoor subscriber units with planned addition of USB and PCMCIA CPEs.  The VistaMAX Network Management Server provides full control over all the networks’ different elements.  The VistaMAX has been successfully deployed and trialed worldwide.

About Vecima Networks

HTC MAX 4G for Russian WiMAX network announced

HTC have announced a partnership with Russian carrier Scartel to produce the world’s first integrated GSM/WiMAX handset, the HTC MAX 4G.

Seemingly using much of the hardware of the HTC Touch HD, it will use Scartel’s Yota WiMAX network as well as offer access to any Russian GSM carrier courtesy of an unlocked SIM slot; however, calls between two Yota customers will automatically be routed as VoIP calls over the WiMAX network. Like the Touch HD, the MAX 4G has a 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera and runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro with the TouchFLO 3D GUI.

Intel Capital Intends to Invest NT$386 Million in VMAX for Mobile WiMAX

Initiatives to Accelerate Growth Opportunities for Intel, Mobile Device Makers.

New Page 1

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Oct.  30, 2008 - Intel Corporation today announced agreements with government and industry in Taiwan intended to extend Taiwan's position as a leading center for developing and deploying the world's next generation of connected devices and related technologies.

Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini announced that Intel has signed an agreement with the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to jointly establish an enabling centre for Moblin, open source software and applications optimized for Intel Atom processor-based devices.  New software and applications are needed to deliver a richer, on-the-go Internet experience on the next generation of connected devices including Atom-based mobile Internet devices, netbooks, nettops and in-vehicle-infotainment systems.

Otellini also announced that, subject to closing conditions, Intel's global investment organization, Intel Capital, intends to invest NT$386 million (US$11.5 million) in Taiwanese carrier VMAX.  Intel Capital's intended investment and Intel's accompanying business engagement will enable VMAX to deploy Taiwan's first mobile WiMAX network, intended to be commercially available within the first half of next year.

"As the Internet evolves, the industry has an opportunity to deliver what consumers are seeking - a fast, seamless and personal mobile Internet experience, regardless of device or location," said Otellini.  "Intel and Taiwan will continue to collaborate to create growth opportunities for the industry."

"With its robust industry ecosystem and ability to commercialize innovation, Taiwan has become a center for design and manufacturing of devices for the worldwide market," said Yiin Chi-Ming, Minister of the Taiwan MOEA.  "With a shared vision to accelerate mobility industry momentum, our collaboration with Intel positions Taiwan to further capitalize on opportunities created by the next phase of the Internet."

With Intel and the MOEA's support, the Moblin Enabling Center's laboratory and its engineers will train and consult to device and software vendors, resulting in faster time to market for Moblin-based devices powered by Intel Atom processors.  Intel's support of the center includes engineering talent, software development resources and software contributions to moblin.org.

Taiwan's First 4G Wireless Network

Intel Capital's intended investment in VMAX and Intel's accompanying business engagement reflect its focus on accelerating the proliferation of WiMAX globally.  More than 350 operators worldwide have deployed WiMAX networks.  Through Intel Capital, Intel has invested in 30 WiMAX technology companies and service providers worldwide.  Intel is a leading enabler of service providers as they deploy WiMAX, including Sprint and Clearwire in the United States, Packet 1 in Malaysia, UQ Communications in Japan, and others globally.

"WiMAX is a key component of Intel's strategy to enable the truly mobile Internet," said Otellini.  "Intel Capital's investment in VMAX positions it to deliver Taiwan's first 4G wireless network."

"The deployment of WiMAX networks and the integration of WiMAX into mobile devices will create a truly mobile and personalized Internet experience," said Dr.  C.  K.  Liu, chairman of VMAX.  "With Intel Capital's support, VMAX intends to become the first-mover in bringing the benefits of high-speed wireless broadband to Taiwan.  VMAX intends to be the first to deploy a 2.5GHz WiMAX network in Asia Pacific."
