The resurrection of WiMax

"Like the offspring of a swan that's been dosed with radiation, WiMax is back and it's bigger than ever," says Dave Mock in The Motley Fool.

Yes, WiMax hopes were revived Wednesday morning, and once again the wireless broadband opportunity is huge, says Scott Moritz in Fortune – "in more ways than one."

After Sprint Nextel and Clearwire failed in their efforts to deliver a nationwide WiMax network rollout, the two wireless firms decided to bring in some friends to help create a $14.5 billion ultra-fast mobile network.

The new consortium is a complex arrangement – with various players contributing either assets or cash – that still has many hurdles to cross, says Moritz. And while it will take the rest of this year to close, if successful it will give the WiMax platform a significant boost in the US market.
