Virgin builds WiMAX network in Russia
The international conglomerate Virgin Group has launched a WiMAX network in 32 Russian cities through its daughter company ‘Trivon’. The network will further be expanded both through acquisition of new market players and obtaining new licences. Virgin plans to occupy 10% of the Russian broadband access market in five years. Analysts point out the company will have to sustain fierce competition and the mentioned above goal might be achieved only in the corporate segment.
An established international player has entered the Russian broadband internet market – the conglomerate Virgin Group has claimed to launch a WiMAS network under the Virgin Connect Brand in 32 Russian regions. Founding by sir Richard Branson in 1970, Virgin sets up enterprises in various spheres including mobile communication, air and railway transportation, traveling, financial services, entertainment, sound recording, publishing business and retail trade. Virgin has opened more than 200 companies under its brand worldwide. The conglomerate’s revenue exceeded £11,5 billion ($ 23 billion) in 2007. The WiMAX network has been launched in Moscow, the Moscow Region, St. Petersburg, the Leningrad Region, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, Perm, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Rostov-na-Done, Krasnodar, Samara, Orenburg, Ulianovsk, Saratov, Penza, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Kaliningrad, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Irkutsks, Krasnoyarsk, Barnaul, Omsk, Kemerovo, Belgorod, Voronezh and Ryazan. The amount of investment is not announced.
