Samsung Enters Russian Mobile Internet Market with WiMAX
Samsung Electronics Co. said it has recently entered Russia's mobile Internet industry by supplying a technology that helps facilitate high-speed wireless Internet connectivity.
Scartel, a Russian mobile carrier launched last year, has recently begun a trial
run of its mobile WiMAX service in Moscow and St. Petersburg, using Samsung's
WiMAX networks and other facilities, according to Samsung.
WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is one of the latest
in telecommunications technology that allows wireless data transmission at
broadband-like speed. South Korea has its own technology, dubbed WiBro, in
commercial service.
The two companies plan to setup as many as 1,600 access points in cities by
early 2009, and to begin commercial service by then.
