State broadband program could benefit county

LOGAN - A state program to bridge Ohio's digital divide may choose Logan as one of two places to launch a pilot program that will show how broadband Internet will work in rural areas.

"The state of Ohio is bound and determined to provide business class broadband to all of its public entities," Brent Runge, director of operations at Hocking County 911 and FastOhio member, said.

FastOhio was formed to bring together Vinton, Hocking and Perry counties for the purpose of working together to bring business class broadband Internet service to the respective communities, according to Carol Porter, the chairwoman of the Vinton County Broadband Council. The local council joined with similar committees in Hocking and Perry in to make up the present FastOhio organization. Formerly made up of only Hocking and Perry county representatives, FastOhio's mission is to develop a workable broadband vehicle to enhance and improve public safety, government, health care, education and economic development opportunities, according to Porter.
