Taoglas Launches Smallest Active Internal Antenna

Solutions For Telematics Industry

11/04/2007 - Taoglas, the antenna solutions provider, has launched a new range of miniature antenna systems for the telematics market, incorporating “the smallest active GPS antenna in the world” - the 13mm square (26dB gain) AP12-A. The full line includes tri, quad and penta-band cellular products compatible with the latest generation of GSM and 3G modules, such as the PC GSM internal antenna series, designed to meet the needs of multi-band GSM requirements. Taoglas is also pleased to announce the PA22, a unique surface mount tri-band GSM ceramic antenna designed for automated SMT processes to reduce the production cost of high volume builds.

TaoglasTaoglas antennas, which are distributed in the UK, Ireland and USA by Alpha Micro Components, are designed to address the unique challenges that each customer faces with new wireless device designs. An antenna’s role in a finished product is often underestimated, yet a functioning antenna is the crucial factor on which the whole device depends. As a leader in design and a constant innovator across various antenna technologies, Taoglas supplies optimized antennas following the precise brief from the customer and selects the best option from its range. System performance, different operational environments, sensitivity requirements and other target performance factors set by the customer are all taken into account during selection. The company’s headquarters are in Ireland and the antennas can be fine tuned at their product development centers in Taiwan and China. North American market approvals are handled by the San Diego Engineering office. Taoglas employs its own team of experienced engineers ready to provide their expertise and advice for the design and installation of Taoglas antennas into final products. All antennas are tested in the customer device, with full testing in a 3D radiation chamber, ensuring that the antenna has been fully characterized. PTRCB and FCC testing is also provided for customers intending to sell their devices in the US market.

With positive feedback from long term customers, Taoglas continues to be at the forefront of antenna development and innovation.  The 2007 product road map sees miniaturized active GPS antennas using a 9mm patch, a new quad-band version of the PA22, and compact antennas for Traffic Management Channels.

Taoglas’ range contains antennas for wireless, embedded and standalone solutions, to implement GSM/GPRS, GPS, Wireless LAN and WiFi technologies into a wide range of devices. These include use in the automotive industry, meeting the high necessary quality standards.

The range extends from internal micro antennas as small as a few millimeters to large external antennas, and custom boards with multiple on-board elements. Taoglas also offers the full breadth of RF cables and connectors for internal and external use and cable adapters.

Dermot O’Shea, Director of Taoglas, commented: “In the past 12 months Taoglas has expanded its product offerings and services enormously. We are pleased to offer the smallest high performance telematics antennas on the market. Our range now includes antenna solutions that operate on UHF, GSM, GPRS, 3G, UMTS, WCDMA, GPS and WI-FI / Wireless LAN spectrums. Customers can greatly benefit from our design expertise, unique customized solutions, high performance and implementation optimization. We continue to innovate and will experience more growth in the antenna market.”

Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director, Alpha Micro Components, commented:  “By partnering with Taoglas who are experts in their field, we are able to offer our customers an excellent range of antennas that can be tuned to meet their exact requirements. We are extremely pleased to represent Taoglas as they have a great range of GPS, GSM, Bluetooth and WiFi products which will be suited to many of our customers' requirements.”
