Are WiMAX radios available now?
WiMAX CERTIFIED™ radios are available. A number of radio vendors including Redline, Aperto, Wavesat and SEQUANS have announced in early 2006, WiMAX Certified products that adhere to the strictures of IEEE 802.16-2004. Since then they have been joined by several other firms who have launched Fixed WiMAX products.
All of these units have completed air interface interoperability testing. Initial interoperability testing by the Forum began during the second half of 2005 and will continue on an ongoing basis. Early estimates for WiMAX CERTIFIED widespread gear availability center around the first half of 2006 depending on the manufacturer in question. A total of over 25 vendors have Fixed WiMAX products at the Cetecom labs (Recently renamed AT4Wireless in a re-branding move) for the second phase of interoperability testing which will include QOS capabilities and other differentiators. Fully Certified fixed WiMAX products are available now. Early products are designed to support the 3.5 GHz spectrum range only. Later profiles will test for 2.5 GHz gear and then 5.8 GHz unlicensed band products however, only a few vendors have announced 5.8 GHz gear.
Recent focus by vendors at the AT4Wireless Labs has shifted to Mobile WiMAX testing. Expect to see interoperability testing heavily underway for Mobile WiMAX early in 2007. Products are already being fielded widely based on the 802.16e technology although primarily in fixed wireless iterations---this is largely due to carriers business needs.
