Does WiMAX cover all unlicensed spectrum?

by Michael Wolleben last modified 2007-03-19 02:56 PM

There is currently no WiMAX product profile for unlicensed spectrum other than 5.8 GHz with Fixed WiMAX. Product profiles for the technology certainly could be developed for other unlicensed frequencies that are covered by the 802.16 standard if it makes economic sense for the Forum to do so. There are early indications that only limited interoperable WiMAX product lines will be offered for unlicensed band fixed service providers. Not every vendor is choosing to field such a product. Licensed band mobile radios seem to have the attention of the majority of the Forum’s members and to date there are no plans to offer unlicensed band profiles for Mobile WiMAX.
